Remarksshot down by ground fire in raid on Ramree, Burma; Sgt G. Regan, Sgt M. Smith, and Sergeant Gordon ROWAN (1069929) KIA. Aircraft caught fire and was seen to crash into hill side and explode. Part of six aircraft mission to attack TAUNGUP ROAD and TAUNGBONGYI. F541: 0930 hrs TO. Did not return. Was seen emitting black smoke. The main plane caught fire borke off and the aircraft crashed into hill side exploding on impact leaving the crew with no chance of survival. INGRAM, Robert John, A/F/L (Aus 400369, Royal Australian Air Force, deceased) - No.11 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 18 January 1944, with effect from 23 April 1943. Born 17 April 1917 in Auckland, New Zealand. Killed in action, 1 June 1943 (Blenheim Z7912). Citation from Air Ministry Bulletin 12623. Flight Lieutenant Ingram took part in operations against the enemy in the Western Desert, Ceylon and Burma. He was navigation officer for his squadron for nine months and latterly led a large number of bombing sorties on Japanese targets in Burma. This officer’s navigation both in the Western Desert and in Burma was outstanding and earned the complete confidence of his fellow pilots and navigators.
